Jane Austen & Southampton Spa

Jane Austen spent three important periods of her life in the Spa town of Southampton, as a child she came here with her school, as a young woman she danced at the Dolphin on her eighteenth birthday whilst on a visit to her cousin Elizabeth Austen, married to John Butler Harrison, sometime mayor of Southampton. But it was after her mother was widowed, and like the characters in Sense & Sensibility was with her two daughters forced to rely on the generosity of male relatives for a home when she moved to Southampton to live with her brother Frank and his new bride.

Walks take one and a half hours although all walks can be tailored to the needs of particular groups.
