Pirates & Privateers

Raleigh, Drake, Frobisher, all these Elizabethan sea dogs walked the streets of Southampton, alongside the privateering Earl of Cumberland, the Huguenot sea dog Jacques Sores and Lawrence Prowse who was captain of The Angel a former ship used for privateering by the mayor of Southampton which ended life as a fire-ship. The Spanish considered these men pirates, and there was perhaps little to choose between some of their actions and those of pirates such as Eustace, the black monk. For Southampton the money brought in by privateers saved the town from financial ruin and made it a centre for pirate goods.

Walks take one and a half hours although all walks can be tailored to the needs of particular groups.
