Murder, Mayhem, Pillage & Plunder
Mayors murdered, Riots on the Saltmarsh, good stolen from vaults, frays and bloodshed, French Raids, even treason! The officers of law and order in Southampton had a lot to put up with. Luckily they had a number of instruments of justice on which to call: The Pillory, the stocks, the ducking stool and The Gibbet. Punishments ranged from fines, to whipping, hanging to be-heading. So to find out where the bodies are buried, how playing bowls could get you in trouble and what it was like being Henry VIII's divorce lawyers.
