The Book of Fines Vol III 1572-1594

The final volume, published in 2010, takes the story of The Book of Fines to the point when the original book was completed a total of 254 folios. Southampton was struggling in the latter half of the sixteenth century and the contents of the volume reflect this. It was a time that saw an increase in poverty and sickness. It was also a time of war, piracy, privateering and voyages of discovery. The mayors still found money to spend on entertainment not, as in earlier times on minstrels, but now on players, musicians, bearwards including the cream of Elizabethan performers and acting companies.

All the volumes are available from the Southampton Records Series which has, along with it's predecessor The Southampton Record Society, has been bringing the archives of Southampton into the public sphere for more than a century. Information on other volumes is available on the Series website, the proceeds are used to produce future volumes.
